Post updated: 7th of April 2026
I have been obsessed with fragrance since I was a teenager.
That is not a content creator talking. That is just true.
Growing up between French and Italian influences in Toulouse, fragrance was simply part of life. It was never a luxury or a hobby. You just wore something, and you cared how you smelled. I still remember my father spraying Azzaro or Ted Lapidus before leaving for work in the morning. Those smells are still somewhere in my memory, sharp and specific, the way childhood scents often are.
Later, during my years in Palma de Mallorca, fragrance became something else entirely. I wanted impact. Volume. Presence. Le Male. Hugo Boss Dark Blue. Calvin Klein Obsession. Polo Sport. Those fragrances made sense then. I was young, I wanted to be noticed, and they did the job.
But something shifts with age. Not suddenly, but gradually. One day you spray something you used to love and it feels like wearing someone else’s clothes. Not bad, exactly. Just wrong.
Now, in my fifties, I want something different. Less noise. More character. More ease. The best colognes for men over 40 are not about smelling older. They are about smelling right: confident, refined, masculine, and easy to wear in real life.
These are the colognes I actually wear. Every bottle in this list lives in my home, and every one earns its place.
1. Le Sel d'Issey — Issey Miyake $110-£75
The current favorite. This is the bottle I wore to my wife's grandfather's 99th birthday, and it's the one that generated the most curiosity.
This is the fragrance I am wearing most right now. It is also what I wore recently to my wife’s grandfather’s 99th birthday celebration, where three different people stopped me to ask what I had on.
That tells you something.
Le Sel d’Issey does not announce itself, and that is part of its charm. It does not try to impress in the first ten seconds. Instead, it smells clean, mineral, and quietly elegant. On my skin, it brings to mind salt on warm rock and coastal air when the beach is empty and summer is almost over.
It opens with a gentle spice, then settles into something calm, polished, and very easy to wear. It stays fairly close to the skin, so this is not a fragrance that fills a room, but it lasts well on me. I usually get around six to eight hours.
For me, that closeness is the point. It feels mature in the right way. Confident, understated, and completely comfortable in its own skin.
If I could keep only one fragrance from this list right now, it would probably be this one.
Best for: everyday wear, work, travel, and any occasion where you want to smell put-together without trying too hard
Best season: spring to early autumn
Longevity on my skin: 6 to 8 hours
Where to buy: Le Sel d’Issey is widely available at major retailers including Boots (UK) and Sephora (US). For the most convenient home delivery and to check the current availability and price, you can find it on Amazon here .
2. L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme — Issey Miyake $105-£75.
Revisiting a legend: L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme. This bottle was my gateway back into the world of Issey Miyake after falling for Le Sel d'Issey.
The classic. The one that launched in 1994 and has never really gone away.
I came to this one recently, not through nostalgia, but through Le Sel d’Issey. I fell so completely in love with Le Sel that I found myself wanting to explore the wider Issey Miyake world, and L’Eau d’Issey was the obvious starting point. The original. The one that started everything.
Just last week, we had a beautiful spring day in Bristol and drove out to Ross-on-Wye, one of those rare English days where everything feels a bit lighter. I wore L’Eau d’Issey, and it was perfect. Fresh, clean, and slightly aquatic without smelling generic. Bright in the opening, then warmer and softer on the skin as the day went on.
There is a reason this fragrance has stayed relevant for more than thirty years. It is the fragrance equivalent of a linen shirt on a warm afternoon. Uncomplicated. Easy. Right.
Longevity is honest: around four to six hours on my skin. But it never feels like it is disappearing, only becoming more intimate. Spray it before you leave the house and let it do its quiet thing.
Best for: spring and summer days, travel, and anything casual and easy
Best season: spring and summer
Longevity on my skin: 4 to 6 hours
Where to buy: A true modern classic, L'Eau d'Issey is readily available at Boots (UK) and Sephora (US). To check the current availability and price, you can find it on Amazon here .
3. Acqua di Gio Parfum — Giorgio Armani $98
Upgrading a memory: Acqua di Gio Parfum. This is the mature, longer-lasting evolution of the scent I wore during my years in Mallorca.
Not the EDT. The Parfum. That matters.
I used to wear the original Acqua di Giò on hot summer days in Mallorca. That fresh, clean aquatic opening made perfect sense in the heat, the kind of fragrance that worked effortlessly when you were spending half your life outdoors in thirty-degree sunshine. I have genuinely good memories of it.
Acqua di Giò Parfum feels like the grown-up version of that DNA. It is still recognisably connected to the original, but it is deeper, richer, and far more substantial on the skin. There is more weight underneath it, with a darker, woodier base that gives it better presence and much better longevity.
Where the old EDT would often fade by early afternoon in real summer heat, the Parfum stays with me. On my skin, I get eight hours easily, often more. It takes something familiar and makes it feel more polished, more confident, and far more complete.
If you grew up wearing the original, this will feel instantly familiar. But it also does something the old version never fully managed: it feels mature enough to wear now, without losing what made it appealing in the first place.
Best for: year-round wear, from the office to the evening, and those days when you want something reliable without overthinking it
Best season: all year
Longevity on my skin: 8+ hours
Where to buy: Acqua di Gio Parfum is currently one of the most popular men's fragrances on Amazon, and for good reason. To see why it’s a bestseller and to check the current availability and price on Amazon, click here .
4. Acqua di Parma Colonia
Old-world elegance. This is the Acqua di Parma Colonia next to the matching candle. Sometimes, you don’t need the scent on your skin; you just need the entire room to feel elevated.
This one feels different from everything else on this list, and I include it deliberately.
My mother is Italian, and when I smell Acqua di Parma Colonia, something in me immediately recognises it. That bright citrus opening, the lavender, the powdery elegance underneath. It smells like a very well-dressed man who has absolutely nothing to prove.
I should be honest, though. This is not for everyone.
It is quite strong in the opening, and it has a very specific character. The best way I can describe it is Italian barber. Old-world barbershop elegance. Citrus, talcum powder, lavender, and something slightly ceremonial underneath it all. If you have ever stepped into a traditional Italian barber and taken in that atmosphere, you will understand Colonia straight away. If that sounds appealing, this could be one of the best fragrance discoveries you make. If not, approach with caution.
There is a reason it has lasted since 1916. It sits outside fashion. It will outlast every trend.
Longevity on my skin is modest, usually around three to five hours, but that is part of its nature. Some fragrances are made to linger all day. This one is made to elevate the first few hours beautifully.
I also have the Colonia candle at home, and it fills the living room with that same unmistakable elegance. That probably tells you everything about how much I enjoy this scent profile.
Best for: mornings, smart casual wear, spring lunches, and those days when you want something classic and distinctive
Best season: spring and early autumn
Longevity on my skin: 3 to 5 hours
Where to buy: You can find Acqua di Parma in high-end department stores across the US and at John Lewis (UK). If you’re a first-time buyer, I highly recommend testing it on your skin first to see how it develops. However, if you already know and love this classic, you can check the current price on Amazon here .
5. Lavande Poivre Noir — L'Occitane (formerly L'Occitan)
A Provence classic in a new bottle: Lavande Poivre Noir. I’ve worn this for years, and despite the rebranding, the scent still captures that wild, earthy South of France vibe perfectly
A quick note first: if you knew this fragrance as L’Occitan, it is now sold as Lavande Poivre Noir. The name and bottle have changed, but the scent itself is the same.
I will be honest: I am not particularly happy about the rebrand.
L’Occitan had a timeless quality to it. The name, the bottle, the whole identity felt like it had earned its place. Quietly iconic. The new bottle looks more generic to me, more like something designed to fit in rather than stand apart.
But the scent is what matters most, and the scent is still excellent.
Lavender and black pepper might sound simple on paper. On skin, it is anything but. The pepper gives the lavender a dry, masculine edge and stops it from feeling soft or predictable. Underneath that, the woody base gives it real backbone.
What I like most is that it smells of the south of France in a way that actually feels true. Not postcard lavender, but the dry, earthy, slightly wild smell of Provence in summer, when the heat has baked everything into the ground. I grew up close enough to that landscape to recognise the difference, and this fragrance gets it right.
So yes, buy it for the smell. Try not to think too hard about the new bottle.
Best for: casual daywear and evenings when you want something distinctive without going too heavy
Best season: late summer through autumn, though it works across most of the year
Longevity on my skin: 6 to 7 hours
Where to buy: While the recent rebranding of L'Occitan has caused plenty of controversy among long-time fans, I can confirm the fragrance itself remains unchanged. You can find it at L'Occitane stores across the US and UK if you want to test the new bottle in person. For those in the UK looking for home delivery, it is also available on Amazon UK here .
6. Horace Vintage Vanilla EDP $82-£62
My favorite discovery of 2025: Horace Vintage Vanilla. It’s spicy, leathery, and has that 'Grasse-made' quality that punches way above its price point.
Horace is a French brand I genuinely love, and Vintage Vanilla might be the best fragrance they have released yet.
Do not hear vanilla and think sweet. Think spicy. Think leather.
The opening brings cumin, pink pepper, and nutmeg, which makes it feel bold and slightly surprising at first. Then saffron and violet begin to settle in, before the base of vanilla, leather, and labdanum deepens everything into something warm, confident, and unapologetically masculine.
I tested it for a full week before writing my review, and by day three I had stopped reaching for anything else. That is always the test. When you find yourself spraying something instinctively every morning, it has earned its place.
Performance is impressive too. I get around six to seven hours on skin, and longer on fabric. The next morning, I can often still smell it on a jumper. For the price, that is remarkable.
If you prefer something darker and more sensual, Horace Oud Rose is also worth trying. But Vintage Vanilla is the one I would pick here for evenings, colder weather, and men who want a fragrance with warmth and personality.
Best for: autumn, winter, evenings, and date nights
Best season: autumn and winter
Longevity on my skin: 6 to 7 hours, longer on clothes
Where to buy: If you find yourself in France, Horace has a fantastic presence with several physical stores, and they also have a flagship in London. However, for those of us in the US and the rest of the UK, the most reliable way to get Vintage Vanilla is directly from the Horace website here .
7. This Is Him — Zadig & Voltaire
Warmth and edge: This Is Him. I took this shot from the sofa—the same spot where I spent yesterday afternoon reflecting on how much this room has seen over the last thirteen years of Dapper & Groomed.
The one I reach for when I want warmth without ceremony.
This Is Him does something clever. It smells like comfort and edge at the same time. The opening is bright, with a touch of spice, but what really makes it work is the way it settles into that warm mix of vanilla and incense.
It is genuinely addictive on skin. Warm without being sweet, intimate without being heavy. To me, it smells like a man who knows himself and does not need to make a big performance out of it.
In fact, this is exactly what I will be wearing tonight when I go out for dinner with my wife. That says a lot. It is the kind of fragrance that feels right for an evening out when you want to smell warm, confident, and put-together without overthinking it.
On my skin, I get around six to seven hours, and a bit longer on clothes. It stays present without becoming intrusive, and it is the sort of scent people notice when they come closer.
Best for: autumn and winter evenings, smart-casual occasions, and date nights
Best season: autumn and winter
Longevity on my skin: 6 to 7 hours, longer on clothes
Where to buy: The availability of This is Him! tends to fluctuate; some months it’s stocked everywhere, and the next it can be surprisingly difficult to find at your local fragrance counter. To save yourself the hunt, the most reliable way to check current availability and price is on Amazon here .
8. Brickell Accolade ~$60 for 50ml
Accolade is a lovely every day fragrance.
I have a real soft spot for Brickell as a brand.
They make natural, organic grooming products, and that same approach carries through into Accolade. Brickell sent me this fragrance for review, and I will be honest, I did not expect to like it as much as I do.
On paper, the composition sounds quite clean and straightforward. Italian bergamot and lemon sit over cedarwood and sandalwood, with guaiac wood underneath adding a gentle smoky touch. But on skin, it feels more interesting than that description suggests.
It is fresh, but not light. Clean, but not empty. There is warmth here. A kind of quiet sexiness too. The sort of fragrance that does not try too hard, but still leaves an impression.
One thing I think is worth mentioning, especially for UK readers, is that Accolade is not currently available in the UK. It also wears differently from many more synthetic fragrances. Smoother. Softer. More skin-like. Less sharp in the opening. If you are someone who sometimes gets headaches from cologne, this kind of formula may feel much easier to wear.
On my skin, I get around six to seven hours, which I think is very solid for a fragrance with this kind of natural feel.
Best for: daywear, the office, casual weekends, and easy year-round wear
Best season: all year
Longevity on my skin: 6 to 7 hours
Where to buy: The fastest way to get your hands on Accolade is via the official Brickell store on Amazon. Please note that this specific link is for US delivery only; unfortunately, they do not currently offer direct UK shipping or imports for this fragrance. 9. Zara 800 Black EDT $25.90-£15.99 available in Zara stores and online
The £13 wonder: Zara 800 Black. I’m testing this one out in the garden today—it’s a constant reminder that looking and smelling great doesn't have to break the bank.
Yes, it is cheap.
Yes, it belongs on this list.
I am not including Zara 800 Black to be provocative. I am including it because I genuinely get more compliments wearing this than some fragrances that cost six times as much. It happens again and again. Someone asks what I am wearing, and there is always something quietly satisfying about saying: Zara.
That is part of the charm.
On paper, it sounds simple enough. A woody citrus fragrance with yuzu, saffron, and tonka bean. But on skin, it feels richer than you expect. The opening is bright and slightly sharp, then it starts to darken and warm up in a way that feels much more evening than daytime. It has a nocturnal side to it. This is not the fragrance I reach for on a Tuesday morning at my desk. This is the one I wear when I am going out and want something easy, attractive, and surprisingly effective.
Longevity is not amazing. On my skin, I get around four to five hours. But at this price, reapplying is hardly a problem. The bottle is good too. Simple, clean, and better-looking than you would expect for the money.
More than anything, this fragrance is a reminder of what actually matters. Not the price. Not the prestige. Not the logo on the bottle. The smell. The mood. What happens when it meets your skin on the right evening.
Best for: evenings, nights out, and any occasion where you want to make an impression without spending much
Best season: autumn and winter
Longevity on my skin: 4 to 5 hours
Where to buy: 800 Black is exclusively available through Zara. You can pick it up at your local store for £15.99 / $25.90, or if you prefer the convenience of home delivery, you can find it directly on Zara.com here . (Please note: this is a direct link for your convenience and is not an affiliate link).
These are the fragrances I actually wear.
Not the ones with the loudest hype. Not the ones some expert on a forum says every man should own. Just the bottles that have earned their place in my home, on my skin, and in my life.
At this stage, that matters more to me than trends ever could.
The best colognes for men over 40 are not about smelling older or more serious. They are about knowing what suits you. What feels natural. What fits the life you have now. Sometimes that means something clean and quiet like Le Sel d’Issey. Sometimes it means the old-world elegance of Acqua di Parma Colonia. Sometimes it means reaching for a $25.90 Zara fragrance because, quite simply, it works.
That is really the point of this list.
Good fragrance is not about price, prestige, or showing off. It is about recognition. That moment when you spray something on and it feels right. Right for your skin. Right for the season. Right for the man you are now.
If you are over 40 and still figuring out what that means for you, start there.
And if you already have a fragrance you love, I would genuinely love to hear what you are wearing.
