Insta360 GO 3S Retro Bundle Review: Small Camera, Big Personality
Insta360 sent me the GO 3S Retro Bundle Special Edition for review purposes. The company has not approved this article or influenced my verdict. All opinions are based on my own experience using the camera.

Insta360 is a brand I genuinely admire. I like its approach to innovation, but I also like the way it presents its products. Somehow, Insta360 manages to make filming feel more creative and considerably cooler than it used to.
Action cameras have been around for years, but tiny wearable cameras such as the Insta360 GO 3S and GO Ultra are still a relatively new category. I have been using the Insta360 GO Ultra for some time and rate it highly (review here), particularly for video. However, the new Insta360 GO 3S Retro Bundle Special Edition offers something quite different.
The camera inside is technically identical to the standard GO 3S. Insta360 has not upgraded its sensor or increased its video resolution. Instead, it has changed the experience around the camera.
By adding a retro viewfinder, a colourful film-camera-inspired design and exclusive retro filters, Insta360 has turned its tiny action camera into something that feels closer to an old compact film camera.
It is a clever idea.
Instead of concentrating entirely on video, the Retro Bundle encourages you to slow down, compose a photograph and wait until later to see the result. After using it for family events, street photography and everyday outings, I have found it to be one of the most enjoyable cameras I have used in a long time.
It is not perfect, though. The viewfinder takes some practice, the controls can be difficult to understand in loud environments, and low-light photography is not its strongest area.
So, does the Insta360 GO 3S Retro Bundle genuinely recreate some of the pleasure of film photography? Let’s find out.
What Is the Insta360 GO 3S Retro Bundle?
The Retro Bundle is based around the existing Insta360 GO 3S.
The camera captures 12MP photographs and records video at up to 4K at 30 frames per second. My review model has 128GB of internal storage, and the camera itself is waterproof to a depth of 10 metres.
What makes this version different is the retro accessory package.
Once the GO 3S is attached to the viewfinder, it looks and feels a little like a compact film camera. You look through the small optical window, compose the shot and press the button on the camera.
There is no screen showing you exactly what the photograph will look like. You do not immediately inspect every shot or take the same picture ten times. You simply take the photograph and look at the result later.
That deliberate uncertainty is a large part of the appeal.
At the time of writing, the bundle is available for around £200 in the UK and approximately $200 in the US as part of a promotion. Prices are likely to change depending on storage capacity, colour and current offers.
Existing GO 3S owners can purchase some of the accessories separately. However, the special retro filters are connected to the NFC custom skin, so you need the Retro Skin to access the complete experience.
What Is Inside the Box?
The Retro Bundle is available in two colour combinations.
The Classic White version immediately reminds me of old Kodak cameras. That association is quite personal for me. When I was around 11 years old, I won a photography competition in my town, and the first prize was a Kodak camera.
The second choice is Classic Red, which is the version I received. Its colours remind me of sports equipment and trainers from the 1980s. It is bright, playful and slightly nostalgic without feeling like a toy.

The presentation is excellent. Everything feels colourful, thoughtfully designed and genuinely fun to open.
One important safety point: the bundle includes powerful magnetic accessories. Follow Insta360’s safety guidance, particularly if you use a pacemaker or another implanted medical device.
What Is Actually Different From the Standard GO 3S?
The camera itself is identical to the regular GO 3S.
You are still getting the same 12MP photography, 4K30 video recording, waterproof construction and internal storage. The Retro Bundle does not suddenly make the GO 3S a technically superior camera.
What it changes is your relationship with it.
The standard GO 3S is primarily presented as a tiny action and POV camera. The Retro Bundle encourages you to see it as a photography tool as well.
Once the camera is attached to the Retro Viewfinder, the experience becomes slower and more deliberate. You compose the photograph through the small viewfinder, press the camera button and continue with your day.
You do not know exactly how the photograph looks until you transfer it to the Insta360 app.
That may sound inconvenient, especially when modern phones allow us to inspect every detail immediately. However, it is also what makes the camera enjoyable.
It reminds me of taking photographs with a film camera, when you had to wait before discovering whether the picture had worked.
How Does the Retro Viewfinder Work?
On paper, the process is simple.
Once the GO 3S is attached to the Retro Viewfinder, you look through the optical window on top and use it to compose your picture.
However, there are two things you need to understand.
First, the viewfinder acts as a rough framing guide. It is not an exact preview of the final photograph. The GO 3S has a wide field of view, so the final image will usually include slightly more than you saw through the viewfinder.
Second, the viewfinder is mirrored. When you move the camera in one direction, the image inside the viewfinder appears to move in the opposite direction. It feels unusual at first and takes a little practice.
When you are satisfied with the composition, press the button on the GO 3S once. Around one or two seconds later, you should hear a sound confirming that the photograph has been taken.
To record a video, press the button twice.
Once you have finished taking photographs and videos, bring the camera close to your phone. The NFC Custom Skin helps launch the connection process and opens the Insta360 app, where you can transfer, view and edit your footage.
The basic process is simple, but using it confidently takes longer than I initially expected.
My First Proper Test at the Twins’ Prom
My first serious outing with the GO 3S Retro Bundle was my son and daughter’s prom.
Parents were allowed to watch the arrivals, and the area was extremely busy and loud. Cars were arriving, people were talking, music was playing and everyone was moving around.
It was probably one of the most challenging environments in which to learn how to use a screen-free camera.
The GO 3S uses a small light and sound notifications to tell you whether it has taken a photograph or started recording. In a quiet setting, this is manageable. At the prom, however, I sometimes could not hear the sound or clearly see the small indicator light.
As a result, I missed a few photographs because I thought I had pressed the button correctly when I had not.
That was partly due to my lack of experience. It was my first proper day using the camera, and I became much more confident after spending additional time with it.
However, it also revealed a genuine limitation. In strong daylight, noisy surroundings or very busy situations, the camera’s feedback can be difficult to notice.
For important family events, I would still have my iPhone ready as a backup, just in case.
For casual photography, though, the uncertainty is part of the fun.
Photo Quality: Where the GO 3S Retro Works Best
The GO 3S Retro Edition takes 12MP photographs, but technical resolution is only one part of the story.
What makes its pictures interesting is their character.
Daylight Performance
In good daylight, the results can be very convincing.
Strong sunlight is not normally a problem for the camera itself, although it can make the small viewfinder more difficult to use. Looking into it under very bright conditions can be challenging, and composing the photograph requires more concentration than it would on a phone screen.
Once you become familiar with the field of view, it becomes easier to predict what the final image will include.
Low-Light Photography
Low-light photography is not one of the GO 3S Retro’s strengths.
As the light drops, images can lose detail and become less controlled. The grain that looks attractive in daylight can become heavier, and the overall image quality is less convincing.
I do not really use the GO 3S Retro at night or in very dark interiors. It is clearly at its best during the day or in reasonably well-lit environments.
Buyers looking for a small camera primarily for evening filming or low-light video will be better served by the Insta360 GO Ultra.
Skin Tones and Portraits
Skin tones generally look natural, although they have a noticeably film-inspired character.
They are not as clean or heavily processed as the results from a recent smartphone. Personally, I think this works well with the overall style of the camera.
The GO 3S Retro is fun to use with people, but your subjects need to remain still for a moment. Because you cannot see the final composition on a screen, it takes a little longer to frame the shot correctly.
It works well for relaxed portraits and group photographs. It is less suitable for fast-moving children, sports or unpredictable action.
Street Photography and Buildings
This is where I think the GO 3S Retro really shines.
The wide perspective, small size and film-inspired colour profiles work particularly well for streets, buildings, shopfronts, architecture and everyday urban details.
Because the camera is so small, it also feels less intrusive than holding up a phone or a large camera. I find myself noticing small scenes and details that I might otherwise ignore.
It makes ordinary places feel more interesting.
Does the Grain Look Convincing?
The grain is surprisingly effective.
It does not simply look like a heavy digital noise effect placed on top of the image. With the right scene and good light, the photographs have a convincing film-inspired texture.
The exclusive Positive Film and Negative Film looks are particularly good. They add colour, contrast and atmosphere without making every picture look excessively edited.
Occasionally, I will transfer a photograph and think a different filter would have suited the scene better. Fortunately, that is easy to change inside the Insta360 app.
You can experiment with another look after taking the picture, so choosing the wrong profile before shooting is not a disaster.
How Does It Compare With an iPhone?
My iPhone takes cleaner, sharper and more technically polished photographs.
Modern smartphone processing controls highlights, sharpens detail, adjusts colours and quietly corrects many aspects of the image before I even see it.
The results are often excellent. However, they can sometimes feel almost too perfect.
The GO 3S Retro offers something different.
Its photographs have more texture, unpredictability and atmosphere. They do not always have the same level of detail as my iPhone pictures, but they often have more personality.
I would not say that the GO 3S produces objectively better photographs than an iPhone. Technically, the iPhone is the stronger and more versatile camera.
However, I often prefer the overall look and feeling of the GO 3S Retro images.
The iPhone helps me capture a perfect picture. The GO 3S makes me enjoy the process of taking it.
That distinction matters.
The viewfinder gives a rough idea of the composition, although the image is mirrored.
Video Quality
Although the Retro Bundle places more emphasis on photography, the GO 3S remains a capable tiny video camera.
It records at up to 4K at 30 frames per second, and the overall quality is impressive for something this small. Footage is detailed, the stabilisation works very well, and the built-in microphone performs better than I expected.
The camera can be removed from the Retro Viewfinder and used independently. You can attach it magnetically to suitable metal surfaces, wear it with the Magnetic Pendant or use the lanyard for hands-free footage.
This makes it useful for unusual angles and short point-of-view clips.
The lack of a screen can make framing more difficult when the camera is used by itself. You can connect it to the Insta360 app and use your phone as a live preview, but maintaining that connection drains the battery faster.
For occasional clips, travel footage and creative angles, the GO 3S is very good.
For regular vlogging, longer recordings or more video-focused work, the GO Ultra is the better choice.
The Insta360 App
My feelings about the Insta360 app are mixed.
The editing side is excellent. You can transfer your photographs and videos, change filters, adjust the image, export files and control the camera’s main settings.
Before taking photographs, you can select your preferred camera setup, image style and video quality. Those settings are then applied when you use the camera.
After transferring your content, you can still experiment with different filters and make further adjustments.
That flexibility is important with the Retro Bundle. Because you cannot check each photograph immediately, it is reassuring to know that you can change the look later.
The app also contains useful tutorials, which I appreciate.
However, the overall interface feels crowded. It includes a For You page, templates, community-style content and a shop section. Personally, I am not particularly interested in those features.
I would prefer something simpler and more focused, similar to the clean approach taken by photography apps such as VSCO.
The tools are powerful, but finding them can sometimes feel messier than necessary.
Overall, the Insta360 app gives you everything you need, but I think it could be better organised.
Battery Life
Battery life depends heavily on how you use the camera.
When I take the GO 3S out for a normal day and use it for a mixture of photographs and occasional short videos, it can comfortably remain useful throughout the day.
The camera is not running continuously, so occasional photography does not place the same demand on the battery as extended 4K video recording.
For more intensive use, the included Battery Pack extends total recording time to up to 76 minutes.
The Battery Pack is an essential part of the system because it is also how you recharge the GO 3S. The camera itself does not have a standard USB-C port on its body. It must be attached to the Battery Pack, which contains the charging connection.
I recommend avoiding a permanent live connection to the Insta360 app unless you need it. Using your phone as a wireless preview is convenient, but it noticeably increases battery consumption.
For the way I use the Retro Bundle—mainly photographs with a few short video clips—the battery has been adequate.
Retail box
Insta360 GO 3S Retro or GO Ultra?
Although the two cameras are closely related, I think they suit different users.
Choose the Insta360 GO 3S Retro Bundle if portability and photography are your main priorities.
It is ideal for street photography, travel, buildings, family moments and everyday details. It is tiny enough to carry almost anywhere, and the retro accessories make the experience feel different from using a phone.
It can still record good 4K footage and work as a small POV camera, but photography is where this particular bundle feels most distinctive.
Choose the Insta360 GO Ultra if video is your priority.
The GO Ultra is better suited to regular vlogging, longer video sessions, low-light recording and users who need a more capable video-focused setup.
Personally, I prefer the overall vibe of the GO 3S Retro Edition.
The GO Ultra is the more capable video camera, but the GO 3S Retro is the one that makes me want to go outside and take photographs.

The Insta360 GO 3S Retro Bundle is best suited to someone who values enjoyment and creativity as much as technical image quality.
It makes sense for:
People who miss the experience of film photography
Street and travel photographers
Anyone who finds smartphone photography too predictable
Existing Insta360 fans who want a more photography-focused experience
People who enjoy retro design
Beginners who want a fun camera rather than a complicated system
Content creators who want occasional POV footage and unusual angles
It is less suitable for:
Serious low-light photography
Fast-moving sports and action
Long-form video recording
Anyone who needs to inspect every photograph immediately
Buyers looking for a replacement for a high-end smartphone or mirrorless camera
Final Verdict
The Insta360 GO 3S Retro Bundle is not the most practical camera I own, and it would not replace my iPhone or the GO Ultra.
However, it may be the most enjoyable camera I have used in a long time.
It brings back some of the excitement of film photography: taking your time, composing the image and waiting to discover the result. The exclusive filters are genuinely effective, the grain is convincing, and the tiny design makes it easy to carry everywhere.
It also has real limitations.
The optical viewfinder takes time to understand. Bright sunlight makes it harder to use, low-light results are not particularly strong, and the camera’s small lights and sound notifications can be difficult to notice in a busy environment.
Most of these problems become easier to manage with practice. After using the camera for longer, I became much more confident about framing and understanding its controls.
What matters most is that the GO 3S Retro Bundle has made photography feel enjoyable again.
Instead of taking dozens of nearly identical smartphone pictures and immediately inspecting each one, I take a photograph, continue with my day and look forward to seeing the results later.
If you want the most capable tiny camera for video, I would choose the GO Ultra.
If you want a portable camera primarily for photography, occasional video and a genuinely different creative experience, the GO 3S Retro Bundle is the more interesting choice.
For me, it is a solid 9 out of 10.
It is imperfect, occasionally awkward and far less predictable than my iPhone.
That is precisely why I like it.
