Philips Norelco Body Groomer 5000 review (for Body and Balls) : My Honest Take After Real Use

Since I launched this blog back in 2013, reviews of body hair trimmers have been a big part of Dapper & Groomed. Men’s grooming is one of those topics where you don’t want marketing fluff, you want real talk: does it work, is it safe, and is it worth your money?

My first proper body trimmer, around 20 years ago (maybe more), was a Philips Norelco OneBlade. Since then, the market has exploded. Manscaped, Meridian, Manspot… there are endless options now. Today, I’m reviewing the Philips Norelco Body Groomer 5000 Body and Balls and honestly, at around $60 when discounted, it’s one of the best value body trimmers I’ve used if you want one tool that can handle more than just your pubic area.

Let’s get into it.

Quick Verdict (If You Don’t Want to Read Everything)

If you want a body hair trimmer that feels solid, is easy to control, and gives you clean results without turning your bathroom into a crime scene, the Norelco Body Groomer 5000 is a great choice, especially for beginners or guys who groom multiple areas (armpits, chest, stomach, bum, pubes… the full routine).

Inside the Box

I’ve always liked Philips packaging. It’s clear, simple, and straight to the point.

Inside, you get a solid selection of accessories:

  • The trimmer itself

  • Intimate combs

  • A bi-directional body comb

  • An adjustable precision comb

  • An adjustable comb

  • A USB-A charging cable

Bottom line: you’ve got everything you need to start grooming properly, without having to buy extras.

What I Actually Trim or Shave With It

Armpit shaved with Norelco 5000 Body and Balls

Every guy is different, but here’s how I use the Philips Norelco 5000 Body and Balls.

Armpits:

I shave them clean. I just can’t stand hairy armpits — for me it can cause irritation, and I swear it makes sweat worse. Clean pits are the way to go.

Tummy + Chest:

I shave my tummy and keep my chest short and tidy, not fully bald. A hairy tummy just isn’t my thing, so hair has to go.

Bum + Bum Hole:

Let’s be honest — as we get older (I’m 51), the backside becomes… more “active” in the hair department. I like to keep it clean, especially around the bum hole. It’s not just aesthetics — it’s comfort and hygiene too.

Balls + Pubes:

I shave my balls because I prefer it that way: it looks better, it feels better, and yes, sensitivity during sex is noticeably different. And realistically… I don’t think my wife is dreaming of licking hairy balls.

I also shave most of my pubic area, but I keep a little hair very short at the base of my penis. And sometimes, especially in summer, I go for the full smooth look.

One important note: I’m not super hairy. If you’ve got a proper jungle situation, you’ll still get good results, but you’ll probably need more time and a smarter approach (trim first, then shave).

Build Quality + Power

This is one thing Philips usually gets right: even when the price isn’t crazy, the product still feels well built. The Norelco 5000 feels strong in the hand. It has a nice weight, it doesn’t feel flimsy, and it’s comfortable to hold even during a longer session.

Battery life is excellent too: enough that you can groom for days (or even weeks) without thinking about charging.

I’m a big fan of Manscaped body hair trimmers, but I’ll say this: the Philips feels more comfortable in my hand, especially when I’m doing the more “delicate” areas.

How I Use It (My Simple Routine)

This is the part most reviews skip, but it’s what guys actually need. So here’s how I do it.

Step 1: Always start by trimming

If hair is more than just “stubble”, don’t go straight for the shave. Trim it down first using a guard.

This makes everything easier:

  • less pulling

  • less irritation

  • more control

  • faster results

Step 2: Shave only once hair is short

Once the hair is already trimmed down, you can go closer if you want. This is where you take your time.

Step 3: For balls and intimate areas: go slow, no pressure

This is my rule: slow and steady wins the race.

  • Keep the skin as flat as possible with your free hand

  • Use light pressure

  • Short passes

  • Don’t rush

If you do that, you massively reduce the risk of nicks and irritation.

Step 4: Aftercare matters (especially if you get redness)

If you tend to get redness:

  • rinse the area

  • pat dry (don’t rub)

  • apply a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser

It’s a small step, but it helps a lot.

Shaving Experience (My Results)

Yes, it’s waterproof and can be used in the shower, but I personally don’t use it that way. I’ve never loved electric grooming in the shower: I prefer trimming and shaving on dry skin. I find I get better control and better results.

  • Armpits: Perfect. Smooth, clean, easy… and most importantly: no cuts.

  • Tummy: Same story. Quick, effortless, and it keeps the area looking tidy.

  • Chest:I used the bi-directional comb to trim my chest and I really like the finish. It looks natural — groomed, not “overdone”. I did get a bit of redness in a couple of spots, but that happens to me with a lot of trimmers. It faded quickly.

  • Bum + Bum Hole: Surprisingly good experience. The shape and weight of the Norelco 5000 makes it easier than many trimmers: it feels stable and controlled, which is exactly what you want down there.

  • Balls + Pubes: This is the big test. And the result? No cut, no blood, no panic.Smooth results where I wanted them, and easy trimming where I keep a little hair.

Overall, I’m genuinely happy with how it handles my routine.

Results on my chest

Do I Recommend It?

Yes! especially if:

  • You groom more than just your pubes

  • You want one tool for armpits, chest, stomach, bum, and balls

  • You’re new to body grooming and want something safe and predictable

  • You want strong value for money (especially when it’s discounted)

If you only trim your pubic hair and nothing else, there are cheaper trimmers that will do the job. But if you want a more complete tool that feels solid and gives consistent results, the Norelco 5000 is a great option.

Pros

  • Great build quality

  • Easy to use and control

  • Excellent results on multiple areas

  • No cuts (including balls and pubes, in my experience)

  • Comfortable grip for longer sessions

Cons

  • The charging cable situation: it’s USB-A / proprietary-style, and I really wish it was USB-C. Don’t lose the cable.

Final Thoughts

If you want one trimmer that can handle your whole body — and you want something that feels solid, predictable, and safe in the sensitive areas — the Philips Norelco Body Groomer 5000 is an easy recommendation from me. It’s not trying to be flashy, it just does the job properly. And at the discounted price, it’s hard to beat.
