Updated 04th of May 2026

I've been trimming my body hair for over 25 years. Since the mid-90s, I made the decision to keep things tidy — and I've stuck to it. Not because anyone told me to. Because I prefer it. Less hair, better hygiene, better feeling. Simple as that. The first proper body hair trimmer I remember buying was a Philips Bodygroom, sometime in the early 2000s if memory serves me right.

I'm 52, half French, half Italian, married to an English woman, and we have four kids. I've been reviewing grooming products for men since 2013 — skincare, trimmers, the lot. So when I tell you I've tested a lot of body hair trimmers, I mean it in the most literal sense possible.

Here's where I actually use them — because I think you deserve that level of honesty. Shoulders and lower back, where hair appeared one day and I decided it wasn't staying. My bum and around the hole, because smooth is cleaner and more comfortable. My balls, because no hair means less sweat and genuinely better sensation during sex. Around the base of my penis, where I go from fully shaved to a short trim depending on the mood. My chest, kept short. My stomach, fully shaved — I hate hair there. Legs I leave alone.

I also spent years working as a Healthcare Assistant in pharmacy. I know what a badly placed nick can turn into. Warm skin, sensitive areas, bacteria — it's not a great combination when something goes wrong. That's why I don't mess around with cheap or poorly designed trimmers in those areas. And that's why the five on this list are the only ones I'd actually recommend.

This isn't about technical specs. You don't need a data sheet. You need to know if it works where it matters. That's what this post is about.

Trimmer Best For Waterproof Battery Price
Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra All-round, balls & groin IPX7 60 min Premium
Manspot Body Groomer Budget, chest & groin IPX7 90 min Budget
Maxgroom Body Shaver Set Full body, back & shoulders Yes 60 min Budget
Gillette Intimate Razor Smooth shave, balls N/A — manual Manual Mid
Ulike Air 3 IPL Permanent hair reduction N/A — corded Corded Investment

How to choose the right body hair trimmer — what actually matters

I've been doing this for 25 years and worked in pharmacy long enough to have seen what happens when men use the wrong tool in the wrong place. Here's what I'd tell a friend before he bought anything.

Blade type first. There are two main types of body trimmer cutting systems and they work differently. Shearing blade trimmers — the most common type — use two overlapping blades that cut like scissors. They're versatile, handle most body areas well, and are what most of the products on this list use. Foil trimmers use a thin perforated metal screen over an oscillating blade — they cut closer to the skin and are better suited to sensitive areas and finishing work. The Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra gives you both in one device, which is part of why it sits at the top of my list.

Waterproofing — more important than you think. Not because you necessarily want to trim in the shower, but because it tells you something about how the product is built. A properly waterproof trimmer — IPX7 rated — is sealed against moisture, which matters when you're using it around areas where sweating and hygiene are factors. I personally trim dry for better results, but I want the waterproofing there as a quality signal and for easy rinsing.

Safety design for sensitive areas. This is the one I feel most strongly about, and my pharmacy background informs it directly. A nick in a warm, moist body area — groin, armpits, between the legs — is not just uncomfortable. It's a genuine infection risk. Bacteria thrive in those conditions. This is why I won't recommend anything on this list that I haven't confirmed is safe on sensitive skin. Rounded blade guards, skin-safe blade geometry, and constant motor speed all reduce the risk of catching skin rather than hair. Cheap trimmers cut corners on exactly these things.

Battery life. Obvious but worth stating. Running out of charge halfway through trimming your balls is not a situation anyone needs to be in. Look for a minimum of 60 minutes of battery life and a USB-C charging option — most modern trimmers have moved away from proprietary charging cables, which is a genuine quality of life improvement.

Replacement blade availability and cost. This is the one most buyers ignore and then regret. Blades need replacing — typically every three to six months with regular use. Before you buy, check that replacement blades are available and what they cost. Some budget trimmers are cheap to buy but expensive to maintain. Factor that into the real cost of ownership.

1. Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra — My Top Pick

A close-up photograph of Jerome, the author of Dapper & Groomed, holding and using the Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra to trim hair on his chest.

Let’s be honest. Manscaped has done an incredible job with marketing. They are everywhere. So it is fair to ask: is the trimmer actually that good, or are we just paying for the name?

In my experience, it is actually that good.

I have used the Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra where it really matters.

For my armpits and stomach, I went in without a guard because I wanted a cleaner finish. No irritation. No cuts. No problems. On my chest, around the base of my penis, and around my balls, I got exactly what I wanted. Short. Even. Tidy. Smooth.

What makes this one stand out is the two-step blade system. First, the trimmer blade takes the hair down. Then the foil blade gets you much closer. The finish is smoother, and you notice it.

For me though, the big thing is safety. With the Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra, I have not had a single cut. Not one. That matters.

It is waterproof, but I still use it dry. Better result. Less mess.

The only real downside is the price. It is expensive. But it is well made, it performs properly, and if someone asked me which body trimmer I would recommend if budget is not the main issue, this would probably be the one.

2. Manspot Body Groomer — The Budget Pick That Surprised Me

Get a closer look at the Manspot Body Groomer. Jerome at Dapper & Groomed reviews the build quality, grip, and design of this top-rated budget body hair trimmer for men.

The next one is the Manspot body groomer.

I think this is probably one of the best-selling body trimmers on Amazon, and I can see why. It is affordable, looks good, and when you pick it up, it does not feel cheap at all. I really like the soft matte black finish. It feels nice in the hand. Easy to hold. Easy to move around.

It comes with a few guards, which is handy if, like me, you do not always want the same finish everywhere. Chest, pubic area, little tidy-up jobs. It gives you options.

Now, this is not the most powerful trimmer on the list. But honestly, that has not bothered me much. The battery is very good, it charges with USB-C, and it has a battery level indicator, which I always appreciate. You know where you stand.

I have used it a lot on my chest, and that is where I think it does a really good job. It keeps the hair short, neat, and under control. No cuts. No irritation. Just easy.

It works very well for trimming the hair around the base of your penis. And if you want to remove it all, more experienced users can go without a guard, slowly and carefully. But when it comes to your balls, use a guard. Always. Do not get cocky.

Around the back, I found it a bit trickier. Not impossible. Just not the easiest.

It is waterproof, but I do not really care about that. I never trim wet hair with an electric trimmer. It is messy, it sticks, and the result is never as good. Dry is better. Full stop.

For the money, this is a very good body groomer. And if you are new to body trimming, I honestly think this is a very good place to start.

  • Waterproofing: IPX7 (up to 1 metre, 30 minutes)

  • LED battery indicator: Yes

  • Travel lock: No

3. Maxgroom Body Shaver Set — More Than the Price Suggests

The Maxgroom body shaver docking station with various trimmer and shaver attachments on a white surface.

The charging base organizes everything in one place—a rare and welcome feature for a budget grooming set.

The Maxgroom Body Shaver Set is a very interesting one.

It is super affordable, and you get a lot for your money. Loads of attachments. In fact, enough to deal with pretty much every bit of body hair you have. Nose included.

The build quality is better than I expected. It feels solid in the hand, and the magnetic heads are a really smart touch. They click on and off easily, which makes the whole thing simple to use.

My favourite attachment is the V-shaped one. That is the one that really makes this set stand out. It is great for reaching the shoulders and lower back properly, and that is not something every body groomer does well.

For most areas of the body, the Maxgroom does a very good job. Chest, stomach, groin area — with the right attachment, you can get very decent results. It feels like one of those kits that was actually designed to be used on the whole body, not just sold that way.

There is also a beard trimming attachment. I tried it on my neckline, and honestly, that is not where this set shines. It is not terrible, but it is not the attachment I would trust for proper beard work.

As a body groomer, though, it makes a lot more sense.

If you want one affordable kit that can cover almost everything, this is a very good option. And if, like me, you need help reaching your shoulders and lower back, that V-shaped attachment is a real plus.

4. Gillette Intimate Razor — The One That Might Surprise You

Jerome from Dapper & Groomed holding the Gillette Intimate Hair Razor packaging.

The Gillette Intimate Razor. It’s not an electric trimmer, but for a truly smooth finish below the belt, it’s my top recommendation.

The next one is the Gillette Intimate razor.

This is a manual razor, and I use it a lot when I want to shave my balls properly or go fully hair-free around my penis. It is quick, simple, and gives you that really smooth finish electric trimmers do not quite match.

I also use it under my arms, because yes, I shave my armpits too. For that kind of job, it is just easy. In the shower, with shaving foam or shower gel, it is fast and convenient.

The big thing to understand is this: there is no in-between with the Gillette Intimate. No guards. No trimming lengths. No “just tidy it up a bit.” This is for a smooth shave. Full stop.

So if you like being completely hair-free down there, this is the one to go for.

Now, a word of caution. And I say this as someone who used to work in pharmacy. Go slowly. Stretch the skin. Use plenty of foam or gel. Do not rush it. A cut down there is not just annoying. It can be properly painful.

And if you decide to use it on your chest, which I have done in the past, be extra careful around the nipples. Gentle. Slow. No heroics.

Honestly, if what you want is a proper smooth shave rather than a trim, this is the one I would pick.

Where to buy: The Gillette Intimate Razor is widely available in most US supermarkets. In the UK, you can find it at your local Sainsbury’s or Boots stores. If you prefer the convenience of home delivery, you can pick it up directly from Amazon UK here .

So there you have it — my four favourite body hair trimmers that I use personally and that I'm confident will serve you well. But here's a question worth asking yourself before you click buy.

What if you don't want to manage body hair forever? What if you're tired of the weekly routine and you've been quietly wondering whether laser hair removal might be worth it?

If that sounds familiar, read on. Because number five on this list is something different entirely.

5. Ulike Air 3 IPL Device — The Long Game

An overhead shot of the Ulike Air 3 IPL Hair Removal Device unboxed with its accessories on a white table.

What’s in the box: The Ulike Air 3 comes as a complete kit, including the IPL device, power cables, safety goggles, and a razor for the initial prep.

Every other product on this list manages hair. This one removes it. Permanently. Or close enough to permanent that the difference barely matters.

The Ulike Air 3 is an IPL device, and if you've never come across IPL before, here's the short version. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. The device emits controlled flashes of light that target the pigment in the hair follicle, generating heat that gradually damages the follicle and inhibits future growth. It's the same principle as professional laser hair removal, just adapted for home use. Less intensity per session, more sessions required, but done consistently it produces genuinely lasting results.

This is not a quick fix. That's the first thing to understand and accept before you spend the money.

Close-up of the white Ulike Air 3 IPL hair removal device showing the sapphire treatment window.

A close-up of the treatment window. The 'Sapphire Ice Cooling' tech is what makes this device bearable; it keeps the skin surface cool even when the light pulse is generating heat in the follicle.

The process works like this: shave the area first with the razor included in the box, then run the Ulike over the skin. You repeat this regularly over roughly 12 weeks before you start seeing the kind of results that make you think "actually, yes, this is working." After that, occasional maintenance sessions keep things under control. It requires commitment. If you're the kind of person who loses interest in routines after three weeks, this probably isn't for you.

But if you stick with it? I used the Ulike Air 4 on my stomach last year. The results were exactly what I wanted — smooth, clean, and I haven't had to think about it since. My wife used it on her legs and had a similarly positive experience. Two different people, two different body areas, same conclusion.

In my experience it works best on larger, flatter areas — chest, stomach, legs. The physics make sense when you think about it. More surface area, more consistent contact, more even results.

Now, the price. This is not an impulse buy. But consider the alternative. Professional laser hair removal sessions are expensive, require clinic visits, and add up very quickly over the number of sessions you actually need. If permanent or near-permanent hair reduction is genuinely what you're after, trying IPL at home first is the intelligent and considerably cheaper starting point.

This is an investment. Treat it like one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a beard trimmer on my body? Technically yes, but I wouldn't recommend it for sensitive areas. Beard trimmers are designed for facial hair, which is coarser and grows differently to body hair. More importantly, the blade geometry on most beard trimmers isn't designed with skin-close body use in mind — particularly in the groin area where the skin folds and moves. A dedicated body trimmer has rounded guards and blade designs specifically built to reduce the risk of nicking. Use the right tool for the job.

Is it safe to shave your balls with an electric trimmer? Yes, with the right trimmer and the right technique. Always use a guard on sensitive areas unless you're very experienced — going guardless on your balls is an advanced move, not a starting point. Keep the skin taut, move slowly, and go with the grain first. The Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra is the one I trust most for this specific job because of the SkinSafe blade system. I spent years in pharmacy and I've seen what a badly placed nick in a warm, moist area can turn into. Don't rush it.

What's the difference between trimming and shaving body hair? Trimming reduces hair length but leaves some hair in place. Shaving removes hair at skin level for a smooth finish. For most body areas — chest, stomach, armpits — trimming is easier, faster, and lower risk. For areas where you want a completely smooth result — balls, base of penis, armpits if you prefer — a foil trimmer or a dedicated intimate razor like the Gillette Intimate is the better choice. I use both depending on the area and the finish I want.

How often should I replace trimmer blades? Every three to six months with regular use. A dull blade doesn't just perform worse — it's more likely to pull and tug at hair rather than cutting cleanly, which increases irritation and the risk of ingrown hairs in sensitive areas. If you notice the trimmer dragging rather than cutting smoothly, replace the blade regardless of how long you've had it.

Should I trim wet or dry? Dry, in my experience. I know most of the trimmers on this list are waterproof and marketed for shower use, but dry hair cuts more cleanly, sticks less to the blade, and gives you better visibility of what you're doing. Wet hair clumps, which can clog the blade and reduce precision. I trim dry every time.

What body areas are hardest to trim? The lower back and shoulders are genuinely awkward — reach is the problem. The Maxgroom's V-shaped attachment addresses this better than anything else on this list. The groin area isn't difficult once you're used to it, but it requires a slow, methodical approach that a lot of men skip in the first few sessions. Take your time. Stretched skin, slow movement, correct guard length.

Conclusion

There you have it. Five body hair trimmers I've actually used, on my actual body, in all the places that count.

Here's how I'd break it down if you're still deciding.

You're experienced, you know what you want, and you like keeping your pubic area really short or completely smooth — get the Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra. It's the best all-round performer on this list and the two-step blade system genuinely delivers a closer finish than anything else here.

You're newer to body trimming, or you want something solid that covers everything — chest, groin, balls — without a premium price tag? The Manspot is where I'd start. It surprised me with how well it performs for the money, and the 90-minute battery is genuinely impressive at that price point.

You want one kit that handles literally everything including your back, shoulders and nose? Maxgroom. Solid, reliable, good value, and that V-shaped attachment solves a problem most trimmers ignore entirely.

You want total manual control specifically for your balls and around your penis, and you want the smoothest possible result? The Gillette Intimate is built exactly for that job. Nothing flashy, just precise.

Whatever you choose — now is the right time to invest in something that actually works. Don't wait until you need it.

Drop a comment and tell me what you're using. Genuinely curious. And if you've got questions about any of these before you buy, ask — I'll answer honestly.
