Horace Ibiza '87 Review: A Warm Summer Night Fragrance With a Party Soul
I've been wearing Horace Ibiza '87 for two weeks now, and the timing couldn't have been better.
We had one of those proper UK heatwaves. We're used to 22 degrees in June. Suddenly it was 39. That's not Britain. And heat like that is unforgiving on a fragrance — it'll expose exactly what a scent does on real skin, not just what it smells like off a card in a shop.
Ibiza '87 is not a quiet fragrance. It's not something you spray without thinking before heading into the office. It's stronger, sweeter, and more expressive than I expected from Horace. First spray, I knew they'd done something different here.
Quick Summary
| Best for | Summer evenings, holidays, parties, outdoor dinners, warm nights |
| Not ideal for | Office wear, hot daytime use, anyone who prefers discreet fragrances |
| Longevity | 5–6 hours on my skin |
| Projection | Strong at first, settles fast |
| Verdict | A confident, warm summer night fragrance with real personality — one of Horace's best |
What Is Horace Ibiza '87?
It's an Eau de Parfum from Horace, the French grooming brand that's quietly built one of the more interesting fragrance ranges out there. Aromatic, woody, effervescent — that's how they describe it. Champagne, cork and aldehydes up top. Juniper, clary sage and thyme in the heart. Fir balsam, labdanum and cypress in the base.
Handmade in Grasse. 90.7% natural origin ingredients. Comes in 50ml and 100ml.
The concept is Ibiza's golden age — freedom, friendship, music, Champagne, warm nights, that nostalgic party feeling. Fragrance marketing loves a story like that.
First Impression
It opens strong. Sweet, bold, impossible to miss. There's freshness in there, but I wouldn't call this a light fragrance — it's got weight to it from the first second.
The Champagne note works. There's a bright, slightly fizzy lift at the top, like a bottle just opened. But it's not a clean, citrusy, shower-fresh opening — it's warmer and sweeter than that. There's a woody backbone in there early too, which gives it more body than your average summer scent.
It reminds me of the opening on Mezcal Musc, another Horace fragrance with presence. This one announces itself. Worth knowing before you buy it.
My daughter noticed it the second I walked in and said it was strong. She was right. My son loved it. That contrast tells you everything about this fragrance — confident, fun, not shy at all.
After 30 Minutes
This is where it shows its real character. The opening settles, and it goes warmer, woodier, more rounded. The sweetness is still there but under control. The Champagne fades back and the thyme, juniper and woody notes take over — dry herbs, warm skin after a day in the sun, that feeling right before the evening starts.
The base is where it grows up. Fir balsam, labdanum and cypress bring depth and warmth. Labdanum especially gives it that amber, slightly leathery pull.
This is not a daytime fragrance. This is a summer evening fragrance — sunset, dinner outside, drinks with friends, the point in the day when work is done and you're allowed to enjoy yourself. Spray this before a meeting and you'll feel overdone. Wear it out in the evening in the South of France or Ibiza, and it makes complete sense.
My Ibiza Connection
I worked in Ibiza for a while, so when Horace names a fragrance after it, I know exactly what they're chasing. Ibiza isn't just beaches and clubs. It's warm evenings, music somewhere in the background, sunset, people gathering slowly, the day sliding into night without anyone wanting to stop it.
Wearing this, I can picture myself at Café del Mar watching the sun go down. Not fresh morning Ibiza. Not the white-linen holiday advert version. Ibiza after 7pm — sun lower, air still warm, someone's just opened a bottle, nobody's rushing anywhere. The fragrance needs to feel a little dressed up, a little confident. That's exactly where Ibiza '87 lives.
Is It a Summer Fragrance?
Yes — for the evening, not the whole day. I wouldn't wear this at 9am on a hot day, and I wouldn't wear it for the school run or the office. For daytime, &Horace and Vetiver Primavera still do the job better — fresher, cleaner, easier when the sun's already brutal.
Ibiza '87 needs the evening. It needs a bit of atmosphere. It's for after you've showered and changed and you're ready to enjoy the warm part of the day instead of just surviving it.
Performance and Longevity
Good performance. Five to six hours on my skin, strongest in that first hour, then settling closer to the skin without disappearing. In hot weather, go easy — two sprays is plenty, maybe three if you're heading out and staying outside all evening. Overspray this one and it'll fight you.
Is It Right for Men Over 40?
I think it actually works better for men who already know what they like. It's got a slightly old-fashioned party energy — and I mean that as a compliment. It's not chasing a modern teenage club fragrance. There's sweetness and strength up top, but underneath it's woody, warm, almost nostalgic.
I'm 52. I don't want to smell like I'm trying to be 22 again — that's the trap with anything built around nightlife. Too loud, too synthetic, too obvious. Ibiza '87 avoids that because the dry-down keeps it grounded. Fun on top, grown-up underneath. That balance is what makes it wearable at my age.
Packaging
Clean, simple, masculine — classic Horace. They could easily have gone loud and gimmicky with an Ibiza theme. They didn't. The bottle stays restrained; the fragrance does the talking. Right call.
Against Other Horace Fragrances
For daytime, I'd still reach for &Horace or Vetiver Primavera first. For the evening, Ibiza '87 is the more interesting choice by far.
Against Mezcal Musc — similar strength at the open, different mood. Mezcal Musc is smokier and more mysterious. Ibiza '87 is sweeter and more festive. Against Oud Rose — Oud Rose still feels more sensual, a touch more feminine. Ibiza '87 is a men's summer party fragrance through and through.

Who Should Buy It
If you want a summer scent with more character than the usual citrus fresh, this is it. Warm, woody, sweet, aromatic — good for holidays, evenings outdoors, dinners, parties, nights away. I can picture this working across the South of France, Spain, Italy, Ibiza — anywhere warm and social. If you already like Horace and want something bolder and more playful from them, this is the one.
Who Should Skip It
If you want a simple everyday fresh fragrance, look elsewhere first. If your main need is office wear, this isn't the Horace to start with — it can be too much in a warm, closed room. If you don't like sweetness, you'll notice it here. And if you want something minimal and discreet, this will feel too loud for you.
Final Verdict
Horace Ibiza '87 surprised me. I expected something fresh and sparkling. What I got was stronger, sweeter and warmer than I imagined. Bold at the open, then thirty minutes in, it settles into something rounder and easier to wear.
This isn't an office fragrance. It isn't a hot-morning fragrance. But for summer nights, it delivers exactly what Horace was going for — sunset drinks, music, that Mediterranean feeling of the day turning into something else. It's not the safest fragrance in the Horace range, and it's not the most versatile. But it's got personality. And on a summer night, that's what you actually want.
If you've already got your clean daytime scent sorted and you're after something stronger and more memorable for the evening, Ibiza '87 is one of the best things Horace has done. Available at Horace.com.
