Apple HomeView Is Here: A Serious Alexa Rival With iMac G4 Charm?

13 October 2026 | Technology News

Apple has just announced the Apple HomeView, a brand-new smart home display priced at $299 in the US and £299 in the UK, and I have to say, this is one Apple product that has immediately caught my attention.

I've just watched Apple's promotional video and spent some time looking through the specifications on its official website.

My first reaction? I love the design.

In fact, the HomeView reminds me a little of one of my favourite Apple computers of all time: the iconic iMac G4, with its rounded base and beautiful floating screen.

Of course, the HomeView is a very different product. But there's something about its appearance that takes me straight back to that period when Apple wasn't afraid to make technology look a little different.

And beyond the design, I think Apple may finally have a serious contender to Amazon Alexa, particularly for households already invested in the Apple ecosystem.

A Beautiful Design That Takes Me Back to My First iMac

When I first saw the Apple HomeView, something about its design immediately reminded me of the iconic iMac G4 from 2002.

And that computer has a very special place in my heart.

The iMac G4 was my very first iMac, and I absolutely loved it.

I still remember how proud I was to own that computer. With its unusual rounded base and beautiful floating screen, it looked like nothing else on the market at the time.

It wasn't just another computer sitting on my desk. It was something I genuinely enjoyed looking at and using every day.

In many ways, the iMac G4 was the computer that made me fall in love with Apple.

More than 20 years later, looking at the new HomeView brings back some of those memories.

Of course, these are two very different products, but I can see a little of that original design philosophy in the HomeView. The rounded base, the screen sitting above it and the attention to small details all feel quite familiar.

And I love that.

Technology doesn't always have to look like a black rectangular box. Sometimes, good design can make an everyday product feel a little more special.

That's certainly how I felt about my first iMac, and it's one of the reasons the HomeView has caught my attention so quickly.

The new HomeView gives me a similar feeling.

It features a 7-inch Liquid Retina display positioned above a rounded aluminium speaker base, connected by an adjustable stainless steel hinge.

It's compact, elegant and unmistakably Apple.

The display includes True Tone technology and automatically adjusts its brightness to suit the room. Apple has also introduced a wall-mounted version for people who would rather have a permanent smart home control panel.

The standard model comes in four colours: Silver, Starlight, Rose Pink and Space Grey.

Personally, I think the tabletop version is the most attractive. I can easily imagine one sitting on a kitchen counter or a desk.

More Than Just Another Smart Speaker

Of course, the HomeView isn't simply a speaker with a screen.

Apple wants it to become a central part of your connected home.

It's powered by an A18 chip and introduces the new Siri AI experience, built around Apple Intelligence.

According to Apple, Siri is now far more conversational, capable of answering detailed questions and understanding personal context when paired with a compatible iPhone or iPad.

You can use the HomeView to control compatible smart home devices, check security cameras, adjust lighting, manage reminders, follow recipes or listen to music.

It also features a 12MP Centre Stage camera for FaceTime calls, four microphones and a speaker system supporting Spatial Audio.

One particularly interesting feature is its ability to recognise up to six different people and adapt the experience to each person.

That means family members can access their own personal information rather than everybody sharing the same interface.

Apple also says that facial and voice recognition are handled through secure processing designed to protect personal information.

On paper, it sounds like a well-thought-out product.

Could Apple HomeView Finally Challenge Amazon Alexa?

This is probably what interests me most.

Amazon Alexa has been part of the smart home world for years, and devices such as the Echo Show have become familiar products in many households.

But I think Apple has an important advantage when it comes to people who already use several of its devices.

If you have an iPhone, Apple Watch, Apple TV or HomePod, the HomeView could become a natural extension of the products you already use every day.

Being able to move between devices, access your personal calendar, make FaceTime calls and control your home from one central screen makes a lot of sense.

I also like Apple's emphasis on privacy and keeping individual family members' information separate.

Having said that, the real test will be how well Siri AI performs in everyday situations and how easily the HomeView works with smart home accessories from different manufacturers.

Amazon already has a mature ecosystem, and Apple will need more than an attractive design to convince people to switch.

Still, from what I've seen in Apple's video and specifications, I think this is a serious contender.

And for somebody already invested in Apple's ecosystem, it looks particularly appealing.

Apple HomeView Price and Release Date

Apple has confirmed that the HomeView costs $299 in the United States and £299 in the United Kingdom.

Pre-orders open today, 13 October 2026, with general availability beginning 13 November 2026.

Both the tabletop and wall-mounted versions have the same starting price, although the wall-mounted model requires a separate mounting accessory.

One important detail for European readers: Apple has confirmed that HomeView will not initially be available in the European Union because of the current availability restrictions surrounding Siri AI.

You can explore the new device and watch Apple's official presentation on the Apple HomeView website.

My First Thoughts: One for the Christmas List

I wasn't particularly expecting to get excited about a new smart home display, but Apple has managed to get my attention with this one.

Perhaps it's the design and those little reminders of the iMac G4. Perhaps it's the idea of bringing my Apple devices together through one central interface.

Probably a combination of both.

At £299, it's certainly not an impulse purchase, and I would want to spend some proper time testing it before deciding whether it really is better than the competition.

But I like what Apple is trying to do here.

The HomeView looks like a product designed to be useful without becoming another complicated piece of technology in the house.

Will it replace Alexa? That remains to be seen. But if you're already in the Apple ecosystem, I think it's one of the more interesting smart home launches we've seen in a while.

And yes, I think I've just found something new to add to my Christmas list.
