Horace 24H Protection Deodorant Review: A Big Improvement
I’ve used Horace deodorants before, and if I’m being fair, my feelings about them were always a little mixed.
I liked the scents. I liked the clean Horace design. They were pleasant to use. But when it came to the one thing a deodorant really needs to do — keep me feeling fresh throughout the day — I thought the old formula was just OK.
The new Horace 24H Protection Deodorant is a very different story.
I’ve been testing three fragrances: Eucalyptus & Sage, Bergamot & Sea Fennel, and Sandalwood & Labdanum. And after using them properly, I can say straight away that this new formula is a significant improvement.
The Biggest Difference Is Performance
There’s no point overcomplicating a deodorant review.
I put it on in the morning and I want to forget about it.
With the previous Horace deodorant, there were days when I became aware of it again later in the afternoon. Not necessarily because I smelled terrible, but because I didn't feel as dry or as fresh as I wanted.
That hasn't been my experience with the new formula.
A few swipes in the morning and I've been staying fresh, clean and, importantly for me, much drier throughout the day.
Horace calls this its 24H Protection Deodorant. I'm always slightly cautious about taking 24-hour claims too literally because everyone's day, body and level of activity are different. But based on normal daily use, the difference between this and the previous formula is immediately noticeable.
It simply works much better.
Horace has kept the formula aluminium-free and alcohol-free, while using diatomaceous earth to help absorb moisture.
The alcohol-free and aluminium-free formula is particularly good on freshly shaved armpits. I experienced no stinging or irritation at all.
No White Marks
This sounds like a small thing until you pull on a dark T-shirt and discover two great white streaks down the sides.
I haven't had that problem here.
The deodorant goes on smoothly and, so far, I've seen no annoying white residue on my clothes. For someone like me who wears plenty of darker T-shirts and shirts, that's a genuine positive.
Again, it's one of those things you don't really notice when a deodorant gets it right. You only notice when it gets it wrong.
Three Scents — And I Definitely Have a Favourite
I've tried three of the new fragrances, and I'd rank them like this.
1. Eucalyptus & Sage
This is easily my favourite.
It's fresh, clean and aromatic without smelling like the sort of aggressively minty deodorant you might have used when you were 18.
There's something very simple and refreshing about it. It smells particularly good first thing in the morning after a shower.
2. Bergamot & Sea Fennel
This one surprised me.
It's still fresh, but it's a little more sophisticated than Eucalyptus & Sage. The bergamot gives it a citrus feel, while the marine side makes it smell clean without becoming too aquatic.
For me, this is probably the most elegant of the three. If Eucalyptus & Sage is my everyday choice, Bergamot & Sea Fennel feels like the one I'd reach for when I'm dressed a little smarter.
Very good indeed.
3. Sandalwood & Labdanum
This isn't a bad fragrance at all. It's just not really my fragrance.
It's warmer and woodier than the other two, and some men will probably prefer it precisely because it has more depth.
Personally, when it comes to deodorant, I prefer something that smells fresh and clean rather than warm and woody.
So this is third place for me, but that's entirely a matter of taste rather than quality.
The solid stick glides on easily and, importantly, I haven't noticed any of the annoying white marks you can get with some deodorants.
The Refillable Design Makes Sense
There's another change I really like: these deodorants are refillable.
You keep the outer case and replace the deodorant stick inside rather than buying the complete product again every time.
I'm increasingly a fan of this kind of system when it's done properly.
It's less wasteful, but there's also something nicer about keeping a proper deodorant case rather than constantly throwing away another piece of plastic when you've reached the bottom.
And the Horace packaging looks good enough that you'll actually want to keep it.
Final Thoughts
The new Horace 24H Protection Deodorant is a real improvement over the previous version.
The performance is much better, it keeps me fresh and dry throughout the day, and I really like the refillable design.
For me, Eucalyptus & Sage is the clear winner, with Bergamot & Sea Fennel a close second.
Score: 9/10
Best for: Men who want a fresh, aluminium-free everyday deodorant that actually performs well.
