Scottish Fine Soaps Thistle & Black Pepper Review: A Brilliant Affordable Fragrance
I discovered Thistle & Black Pepper Eau de Toilette from The Scottish Fine Soaps Company completely by accident.
I was walking around my local TK Maxx in Bristol when I noticed a bottle on the shelf. It was in the previous packaging rather than the newer black design, and I knew very little about the fragrance.
But I saw two words that immediately caught my attention: black pepper.
I love black pepper in men's fragrances. To my nose, it has this wonderfully clean, dry and masculine quality that can make a fragrance feel incredibly sophisticated.
So buying Thistle & Black Pepper without having properly tested it first was definitely an impulse purchase. I'm very glad I took the chance.
What Does Thistle & Black Pepper Smell Like?
Black pepper is very much the star. From the first spray, there is a noticeable peppery freshness, but what surprised me is how controlled it feels.
It isn't harsh. It isn't overpowering.
Instead, there is a clean, slightly spicy quality that immediately feels masculine and very easy to wear.
There are other notes working behind the black pepper, including warmer musk and woody elements, which stop the fragrance from becoming too sharp.
As it settles, it becomes smoother and warmer while retaining that clean peppery character.
But make no mistake: black pepper remains centre stage, and that is exactly why I like it.
A Very Clean, Masculine Fragrance
"Clean" is probably the word I keep coming back to with Thistle & Black Pepper.
Not clean in the aquatic, shower-gel sense. This is drier and warmer than that.
There is something about black pepper combined with the musk and woods that reminds me of the feeling you get after shaving, putting on a clean shirt and getting ready to go out.
It feels traditional without smelling old-fashioned.
And despite the relatively low price, I don't think it smells cheap.
That's probably what surprised me most.
What About Longevity?
For an Eau de Toilette at this price, I have been pleasantly surprised (3-4 hours).
I wouldn't compare its performance with a much more concentrated Extrait de Parfum, but that isn't really the point.
Thistle & Black Pepper has enough presence to remain noticeable without becoming heavy.
For me, this is exactly how I want an affordable everyday Eau de Toilette to behave.
Spray it in the morning, enjoy that initial peppery freshness and then let it gradually settle into something softer and warmer.
The New Packaging Looks Much Better
The bottle I picked up at TK Maxx uses the previous Thistle & Black Pepper packaging.
The Scottish Fine Soaps Company has since redesigned the range, and I think the new predominantly black presentation suits this fragrance much better.
It looks cleaner, more contemporary and considerably more masculine.
Importantly, this is still very much the same Thistle & Black Pepper fragrance identity, so if you happen to find one of the older bottles like I did, I certainly wouldn't dismiss it because of the packaging.
The fragrance inside is what matters.
Who Is Thistle & Black Pepper For?
I think this fragrance makes most sense for men who like clean, woody and spicy fragrances but don't want anything particularly heavy.
If you already enjoy black pepper as a fragrance note, this is an easy recommendation. It is also a very good everyday fragrance.
Work, weekends, dinner, going out during the day — I struggle to think of many situations where it wouldn't work.
And because the black pepper is controlled rather than aggressive, I don't think you need to be a serious fragrance enthusiast to enjoy it.
It's simply very easy to wear.
Final Thoughts
Thistle & Black Pepper was a completely random purchase for me.
I spotted it in TK Maxx, saw "Black Pepper" on the bottle and decided to take a chance.
Sometimes impulse purchases don't end particularly well.
This one did.
It smells clean, masculine, slightly spicy and incredibly easy to wear, with the black pepper taking centre stage without ever becoming overpowering.
Most importantly, I genuinely enjoy wearing it.
At under £25, I think The Scottish Fine Soaps Company Thistle & Black Pepper is excellent value and an easy fragrance to recommend.
If you like black pepper fragrances, this is one of those inexpensive bottles that might surprise you as much as it surprised me.
