Action cameras have become seriously capable over the past few years, but the best models from GoPro and Insta360 can quickly become expensive.

That’s what makes the new SJCAM SJ6 Ultra interesting.

SJCAM is positioning its latest action camera as a much more affordable option for creators, with 4K/30fps recording, a 166° ultra-wide lens, dual displays and SteadyMotion 2.0 stabilization packed into a camera selling for around the $100 mark.

Built for Social Video Too

One feature that immediately caught my attention is lossless vertical shooting.

Instead of filming horizontally and cropping afterwards, the SJ6 Ultra can record vertical footage directly for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts while retaining 4K resolution.

For creators who regularly switch between YouTube and short-form content, that could make the workflow considerably easier.

SJCAM has also included SteadyMotion 2.0, six-axis gyro stabilization and up to 45° horizon correction, which should make the camera particularly interesting for cycling, motorcycling and handheld travel footage.

A Cheap Wireless Mic Option

Audio is often where inexpensive action cameras struggle, so the SJ6 Ultra’s support for an external wireless microphone could be one of its most useful features.

It can pair with SJCAM’s optional M4 Wireless Mic, which is priced at just $14.99.

That potentially gives vloggers a complete camera-and-wireless-audio setup without spending hundreds on accessories.

There’s also voice control, support for the SJCAM X app and OTA firmware updates, while the included waterproof housing is rated to 30 metres / 98 feet.

My Thoughts

I recently reviewed the Insta360 GO Ultra, so I’ve spent quite a bit of time lately thinking about what makes a small action camera genuinely useful.

Of course, the SJCAM SJ6 Ultra sits in a completely different price category.

But that’s exactly why I’m interested in it.

At around $130, I’m curious to see how good the stabilization really is, how the 4K footage holds up, and especially whether the inexpensive M4 wireless microphone can deliver usable audio for vlogging.

On paper, it looks like a very compelling option for someone who wants to start filming travel, motorcycle content or social video without spending several hundred dollars.

Price and Availability
